I released the Lead Kid demo one year ago today, and a lot has happened since, so I think I owe you all an update on the game.

Yes, the game is still in active development. It’s just been slow because of my other projects such as And the Tortoise Won and the Name Jam, and big changes in my personal life. Nonetheless, 3/6 levels are finished, and the other 3 have all been started. I realize I missed my original 2025 release date, but I’m really aiming for Q1 2026 — I’ve got big plans after this is out.

Lead Kid will also be my last Game Boy (GBDK 2020) game, as Godot will be my engine of choice moving forward. It was fun being rather close to the hardware for such an old, simple system, and I’d like to go out on as much of a bang as I can, but it’s been more trouble than it’s worth and my future projects should come just a bit more quickly. Expect the demo to get one more update before the full release.

Lastly, following the precedent set by Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the full release of Lead Kid will be open source under the GPLv3. I’ll still be copyrighting the assets, which will allow me to sell the game, so only the source code in uncompiled form is free to redistribute. With how cheap the game is anyway, my hope is that it shouldn’t make that much of a difference.

TL;DR it’s happening I swear :)
